Why most paper trading teaches the wrong lessons

🚫

Fantasy fills

Typical simulators "fill" your order even when a stock is locked at upper circuit — a trade you could never take with real money. You learn a strategy that only works on paper.

🎢

No exit discipline

Most virtual trading apps test whether you can pick entries. Real P&L is decided at the exit — and most simulators never make you practise it.

Results that vanish

Your practice history disappears when you go live. The point of paper trading is evidence — you should carry it with you.

How TradeDiary does it differently

🧺

Forward-test baskets

Build a basket of NSE/BSE stocks and mark it as a Forward Test. It tracks live market prices like a real portfolio — value, P&L, allocation, day movers.

Circuit-aware fills

If a stock is frozen at its circuit limit, your paper order stays unfilled — exactly like the real market. No fantasy entries, no fantasy exits.

EMA & % stop-loss alerts

Put a percentage stop-loss and target on any stock, or a 20-EMA trailing stop that rides the trend. Get alerted the moment a level breaks.

Graduate to real trades

When the strategy earns your confidence, import your real trades from Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, Dhan or Kotak — and compare live results against the forward test.

Start forward-testing in three steps

1

Create a free account

No broker login, no KYC — just an email (or sign in with Google).

2

Build a forward-test basket

Add the stocks your strategy picks, with quantities and entry prices. Mark the basket as a Forward Test.

3

Set stops and watch it trade

Add %-based or 20-EMA stop-loss alerts, then let live prices judge the strategy — without risking a rupee.

Frequently asked questions

Is paper trading on TradeDiary free?

Yes. Create a free account, build a forward-test basket and start paper trading NSE/BSE stocks with live prices. No credit card required.

What is forward testing and how is it different from backtesting?

Backtesting replays a strategy on past data, where hindsight and overfitting flatter your results. Forward testing runs the strategy on live market prices from today onward — the same uncertainty you'd face with real money, minus the risk.

How realistic are the fills?

More realistic than most paper trading apps. If a stock is locked at its circuit limit, your paper order doesn't fill — because it wouldn't fill in the real market either. Most simulators happily "buy" you an upper-circuit stock at the locked price, which teaches exactly the wrong lesson.

Can I use stop-losses in paper trading?

Yes — two kinds. Set a percentage-based stop-loss and target on any stock, or use a 20-EMA trailing stop that follows the trend. You get an alert when a level is hit, so you practise exit discipline, not just entries.

Can I track my real trades in the same app?

Yes. When you're ready to go live, TradeDiary imports your real trades from Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, Dhan, Kotak and other Indian brokers — so your paper results and real results live side by side.

Do I need a broker or demat account to paper trade?

No. Paper trading needs only a free TradeDiary account — no broker login, no demat, no KYC.
