Compounding: small per-period edges become large numbers

Final value = P × (1 + r)^n   (+ contributions compounded)

2% a month sounds modest; compounded for 24 months it's +60.8%, and for 5 years it's +229%. That's the promise. The honest caveats: real trading returns are lumpy, drawdowns interrupt the curve, and per-period returns above a few percent are extremely hard to sustain — plug in numbers you've actually achieved over a meaningful sample, not aspirational ones.

The "growth multiple" is the cleanest way to sense-check a projection: if the calculator says your plan turns ₹5 lakh into ₹50 lakh in three years, the plan — not the math — is what needs review.

Stop calculating trade-by-trade. TradeDiary imports your trades from Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, Dhan & more, and tracks these numbers across your whole history.

Frequently asked questions

Is compounding realistic for trading returns?

Directionally yes — profits do increase your capital base. But trading returns arrive irregularly with drawdowns, and most traders withdraw profits or hit capacity limits. Treat the projection as a ceiling under ideal consistency, not a forecast.

What per-period return should I enter?

Your actual historical figure over at least 6–12 months, net of charges — from your journal, not memory. Entering 10% monthly because a good month hit 10% is how projections become fiction.

Why does adding a monthly contribution change things so much?

Early contributions compound for the entire remaining duration, so regular additions often contribute more final value than the return rate itself for horizons under a decade. Consistency of deposits beats heroics of returns.
