Breakeven: where an options trade starts making money at expiry

These are expiry breakevens. Before expiry, time value means the position can be profitable below breakeven (or losing above it). For index options on NIFTY/SENSEX, multiply per-unit numbers by the lot size to get rupee amounts.

Stop calculating trade-by-trade. TradeDiary imports your trades from Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, Dhan & more, and tracks these numbers across your whole history.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my long call losing even though the index moved past the strike?

Crossing the strike isn't the breakeven — the index must exceed strike + premium at expiry. Before then, falling implied volatility and time decay can offset the directional gain. This is the most common surprise for new options buyers.

Do breakevens include brokerage and charges?

No — these are clean price-level breakevens. On NSE options, sell-side STT (0.15% of premium since 1 April 2026) and ₹20/order brokerage nudge the true breakeven slightly further out. Use the Indian Brokerage Calculator for exact charges.

Which is better — a naked call or a bull call spread?

The spread costs less (the sold leg funds part of the bought leg) and has a nearer breakeven, in exchange for capped profit. In high-IV environments spreads are often the better-priced expression of a directional view.
